The most common wasps that you will see in Ontario are yellow jackets, bald faced hornets and paper wasps. Wasps can be identified by their slender, needle thin waists, oval eyes and long antennae. They also generally have smooth bodies, unlike the hairy bodies of bees and flies. All wasps generally have an abdomen somewhat narrowed at the base, Most wasps have two pairs of membranous wings, although some forms are wingless. Wasps vary in size from 1mm long up to 35mm long. The term hornet is often used to refer too many of the wasps that build large papery nests.
Wasps are easily distinguished by the bands of black and yellow or white on their abdomens.
They typically build their nests under in homes, cottages, outbuildings, roof overhangs, in attics, crawlspace, inside walls, under decks or porches and in trees or shrubs. The nests are constructed of a paper like material formed from chewed wood. These wasps have a habit of scavenging in garbage and recycling bins.
