Paper Wasps can be found throughout Ontario. Adult paper wasps are about 16 to 20mm and are brownish with yellow markings, a few species with reddish markings. Paper wasps get their common name from the paper like material from which they construct their nests.
Paper wasps like to live in or near orchards, vineyards, in tree and shrubs, but will also hang their nests from porch ceilings, the top member of window and door frames, eaves, attic rafters, deck floor joints and railings or any protected place.
Each nest hangs like an open umbrella from a stalk, and has open cells that can be seen from beneath the nest. Paper wasp nests rarely exceed the size of an outstretched hand and populations vary between 10 to 100 wasps. Nests consist of a single layer of paper like comb with the cells opening downward. This comb is supported/ suspended from a branch, twig or horizontal surface by a single connection.
Over wintering inseminated queens begin building nests in the spring. These queens are often joined by other inseminated queens who assist in nest building and maintenance. Such secondary queens become functional workers and leave the egg laying to the founding queen. A single egg is laid in each cell and the developing larva is fed primarily protein from insect prey. The cell is capped when the larva is ready to pupate. Nests are small to moderate in size, containing anywhere from 50 to 250 cells.
Paper wasps species are relatively not aggressive, but they can be a problem when they disturbed.
